Sincere condolences to the Mauger Family on the sad passing of a legend. Thank you to Ivan for introducing me to SPEEDWAY at Barrow.
Have to say I met Ivan several times at various tracks. He would always sign my autograph book. Whereever he rode he put on a top show, a great man and the greatest of riders will be sorely missed all over the speedway world.
I remember riding my bicycle wanting to be Ivan Mauger, going around a corner so low the pedal hit the road, I still have the scars on my knees to this day..loved it.
What a thrill it was to watch Ivan race, the excitement of knowing I was going to see him at Western Springs in Auckland NZ, the build up of the whole week, just waiting for Saturday night...and finally, there he was, in the flesh, my hero right in front of me.
How proud I was to follow him in 1985 as he was retiring from racing with a national tour through NZ. Simon Wigg, Neil Evitts, Bobby Swartz, John Cook were among the riders on the tour, just fantastic.
And to take NZ to a World Team Cup victory, so very proud indeed.
My memories are treasured moments, to meet him was an absolute thrill.
He loved his wife, loved his kids, had tremendous success, some big disappointments too....a very full life, a life that was truly lived.
He will always be an inspiration to me as a man, husband and father.
My very best wishes to Raye , Julie, Debbie and Kym
RlP lvan. You were my favourite speedway rider. Condolences to the family.
Thank you Ivan for the memories you have left me,. I was a Wimbledon supporter from 1960 and am now so pleased to have witnessed your rise to stardom over the years since.
God be with you.
RIP Ivan...a rare breed of a man. A spectacular speedway ambassador and my hero from being a child watching you at Belle Vue. I (aged 8), dared to hold your pint of Guinness whilst you signed my autograph book and was so excited to meet you again in 2011 where you told me you hadn’t particularly liked Guinness!!..heartfelt condolences to the Mauger family..?
RIP Ivan, you were the greatest speedway rider ever. You will always be remembered and never forgotten. We have lost a true champion. God bless and rest in peace. My thoughts are with Raye and the rest of your family at this sad time
One of the best riders I have seen RIP ivan
It's always sad when a great sportsman passes and Ivan was certainly that - a legend in fact. Yet another of the sporting heroes from my youth gone too soon. Sincere condolences to all Ivan's family, friends and fans the world over.
Great memories of the time Ivan rode at Hull. A true profesional and Gentleman. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
RIP Ivan
I saw you win at Gothenburg 1977 and Katowice 1979 but so many other memories as well. You were a mover and a shaker and the speedway world changed because of you, Proud to have met you briefly once. There will never be anybody else who could do what you did with the sport.
Ivan was worthy of the title "THE GOAT" not in a derogatory way but THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. I had the pleasure of meeting him and a photo taken with him when he came to Wolverhampton to sign his book "The Will to Win". Lovely man, perfect gentleman. Condolences to his family. Thanks for the memories Ivan. God Bless.
I would like to wish all Ivan's family the best. I was so sorry to hear of his death. Met him a number of times and always seemed a really nice guy, although sadly never got to see him race live.
RIP Ivan Legend
So many superlatives you can say about Ivan. He will be sadly missed, a true legend.
RIP Ivan
Ivan was the consummate professional - the greatest of his era. It was not always a pleasure to watch Ivan, because usually he was beating our team, but one has to admire his will to win and the way he went about his business. He was simply the best and never gave anything less than his best. A great ambassador for speedway racing, the sporting fraternity will be the poorer for his passing. My thoughts are with Raye and his family. RIP Ivan.
A true great of the sport. I was 16 when I first saw Ivan Mauger race in England at the Blackbird Road stadium, at Leicester. I always admired the way he raced. My thoughts and condolences to his family.
Always immaculately turned out and could beat anyone at a time when every team had at least one world class rider. Brilliant stars are not all in heaven. God Bless Ivan. Rest In Peace. Legend.
Ivan transformed Belle Vue when he joined the team. I can remember him once at King's Lynn literally talking to Jim Yacoby before a race into ensuring they earned a 5-1 together. I recall his breaking Peter Craven's track record in a heat most of us were concentrating on who was second and third. He was so single minded but few of us saw the family man and joker - we just saw a winner. The greatest by far.
So sad to hear of Ivan's passing. I was lucky enough to meet Ivan & Raye when they visited Glasgow a few years ago, a great pleasure to chat with both of them. Rest in peace Ivan, Condolences to all the family
Fantastic rider and a true gentleman. Rip.
