A true icon of Speedway RIP legend
Thanks for great memories Ivan. A True Great and a Gent. I will never forget when Ivan visited Dudley Wood against my beloved Cradley in the 70's
and on one occasion kindly allowed me to help push his bike from his van down the back straight to the pits only for him to tread on my foot with his steel shoe. I Was 7 Years old At the time "Ouch That Hurt" - Lol. I will never forget that special moment. Ivan - Ole - PC - Penhall - Gundersen - Carter - Nielson. This batch of riders were the Royalty of Speedway and always will be and will never be forgotten.
Rest In Peace Ivan.

Very sad to hear the news and my condolences to Ivan's family. My abiding memories of Ivan were of him being virtually the only guy to defeat Charlie Monk around White City in Glasgow. He was a fantastic rider and I always expected him to win any meeting that I saw him at. The last time that I had the pleasure of watching Ivan was in 1978 when I was working in West Germany at the time and saw him beating the local hero Egon Muller in a grass track meeting. Great memories of an absolute legend.
A true legend. He will be sorely missed by the speedway world - having said that, mine, and my family's thoughts are with his family at such a sad time.
What can I add? Ivan was and still is the most influential and greatest speedway rider of all time .
I saw him ride on a number of occasions, assassin, totally professional and dedicated to win. A true speedway legend,
Thank you for all the wonderful times I saw you from 1965 onwards. RIP champ.
As a Belle Vue fan with a Kiwi mother, such a touching tribute the other night at the meeting against Poole.
True legend of speedway, a rider who even people who did not follow speedway all knew the name of Ivan Mauger R.I.P
Started going speedway in 68 at West Ham. Saw Ivan then with Belle Vue. Was a tremendous rider then and followed him throughout his career. A very true professional and immaculate rider, one of the greats even to say the Greatest of all time put speedway on the map all over the world for everyone to enjoy will be really sadly missed....R I P Ivan ⚒⚒⚒
My very first sporting hero as a four year old Speedway fanatic watching the Belle Vue Aces. The word Legend is used to describe far too many who don't deserve the description. Not in this case... RIP Ivan, Condolences to his Family.. A TRUE LEGEND...
As a Cradley Heathens fan since the 60's I have many memories of Ivan and his tremendous ability on a speedway bike. There was always a feeling of excitement and anticipation at Dudley Wood when Ivan was coming to ride. There was always the hope that one of our team would beat him. Our dreams were rarely fulfilled! Especially in the Wembley world final run off with Bernt Persson and yes I was there for that one too.
For anyone, in any sport, who aspires to be a champion they should look no further than Ivan Mauger to understand what it takes. Desire, focus, hard work, professionalism, single minded dedication and a need to keep on improving even though you have already set impossibly high standards. Simply the best the sport has ever seen, no question, no debate needed. Our best wishes and thoughts to Ivan's family at this time.
Ivan to me was fantastic to watch racing in whichever colours he wore. Watched him help the younger riders in every team whatever nationality. A True Gent and a Fantastic Ambassador for the sport of speedway. RIP IVAN A NEW STAR IN HEAVEN x
Rember watching on tv in 70's as a child with Dave Lanning's comentry on the greats. Remember the fist pump in the wet. Most of all. Rip to the best ambassedor for speedway
I only saw him once – at Exeter’s farewell meeting back in the mid 2000’s, but always known what a Legend he was. Will be sadly missed. RIP.
The Pele of speedway! An icon, pioneer and the greatest speedway rider ever. I am a big rugby and speedway fan ... from Plymouth UK my family watched The Falcons every Monday after the Plymouth Devils, Pennycross Stadium finished in 1972. We watched the Falcons from the 1969 too. My Dad always said up until from 1973 "That damned Mauger won .... again!!" We always knew that she was a legend. When Exeter signed Ivan in 1973, about 10,000 saw him for his a debut, faultless and in 1974 the Championship. My Dad said "I always said that he is an incredibly nice bloke" :o) I love many sports .... but the sportsman that will be ever my first and only favourite will be Ivan Mauger. Simply, he is inimitable and a giant of legend. I wrote that Ivan had Cognitive Aphasia. After a serious stroke, I have a type of Aphasia ... so forgive my writing is not a little some problems. I would like to pass family's Ivan and all friends for my condolences. best regards Roger (Roger Osborne)
A true professional who came to England with nothing and ended up ruling The World of Speedway.
My admiration for this guy knows no bounds, bikes always immaculate and well turned out.
Thank you Ivan for all the thrills that you gave us .
R.I.P
My all time speedway hero, and in my opinion the best sportsman ever to come from New Zealand. Ride In Peace Ivan
Sincere condolences .. R I P .. A great loss & a legend for sure x
R.I.P Ivan - sporting legend is often used for sports stars who are not legends. But no doubt Legend is the perfect terminology to describe Ivan Mauger and his achievements all over the world.
Very sad news he was simply the best
