We have lost a true legend and a great ambassador of this great sport of ours. He was the greatest without question and a role model speedway rider in every sense. Rest in peace champ and thank you for making my childhood memories just that little bit better. My condolences to his family as he will be sadly missed by a great many people.

My thoughts go out to Ivan's family, a man you should all be proud of! I was very young when I saw him ride but a name never to be forgotten in the speedway world xx

We're all the poorer for Ivan's passing but richer for having seen him in action. Probably the world's greatest rider and a sportsman Christchurch can be really proud of. RIP Ivan

Ivan was already retired by the time I was watching speedway, but the rider he was transcended generations. Some of the stories I’ve been told are fantastic R.IP Ivan

Privileged to have seen the great man ride for Exeter against the White City Rebels at White City in 1977. A true speedway legend who will be sorely missed.

His prowess in World Finals and for his beloved New Zealand in World Team Cups is testament enough to his consistent brilliance.
However; it is via his British League statistics, for number of Clubs, at times in a League far bigger than it is now, with far more strength in depth, where many 2nd string riders would be No 1's in the modern; that emphasise he will never have any equals.
A consummate professional, a perfect role model; a sponsors dream and a thoroughly decent and approachable man. As a rider, a sportsman a legend and as a man simply outstanding. RIP

I saw Ivan many times at the Hackney Hawks speedway track in Hackney. Yes he was one of the greats. In those days you could go down to the pits and talk to the riders or in the club house. He will be missed but his memory will live on. R.I.P Ivan.

Watching Ivan ride for the Belle Vue Aces as a child, going to Wembley and not being able to watch his last race which made him world champion. My mum told me, so my teddy got thrown in the air and went four rows back, it was returned to me. Back at Belle Vue to see him before the meeting, on the back of a car, with the championship wheel...... Photos a plenty.. He was my idol, then a few years later, my dad made him a cake of a speedway track, with Ivan and Ole Olsen on bikes, the best part of this, we went into Hyde Road pits, to give him the cake, before he left to go to the airport. He was amazed by it, so friendly to a very shy girl at the time.... I also joined his fan club...... Those memories are with me as if it was yesterday, I am so grateful that i was able to see him ride. He was the master, and will leave such a void in our lives.......... Thank you Ivan..R.I.P..

Ivan was by far the best rider I ever saw riding at Old Meadowbank in the sixties. He was a gentleman when he signed his book at Armadale. R.I.P.

I witnessed at least two of Ivan's World championship wins at Wembley stadium forging a passion for Speedway riding which remains to this day. God speed Ivan Mauger and thank you

One of the absolute best riders ever. New Zealand has lost one of its sporting greats of all times. He was so professional. I do not think I ever saw him have an engine failure. Some would say he was a 'gater', which in deed he was. However, on several occasions I actually did see him miss the gate, but by turn four of the first lap he was back in front where he stayed. [One exception to this at a Wembley World Final - but he only needed a point, which he got, to be Champion - and look who won that race and where they finished! I say no more]. Hyde Road in the sky now has King Ivan at the tapes.

Condolences to Ivan's family. What a great legend and a great person. Will be forever remembered at Western Springs Speedway. Long remember watching Ivan ride and win when I was a child. RIP.ox

Being an x Raider I got so much from watching Ivan ride the lines he used was brilliant and used them a lot so my heart goes out to you all who lost this brilliant man R.I.P Ivan

Ivan Mauger was a true speedway legend and ambassador for the sport and the country of New Zealand. Admired by all speedway supporters around the world. So privileged that my late father and I saw you ride during the 1970’s for Belle Vue, Exeter and Hull, and set the standard for the professional riders of today. Many thanks for the memories. Sincere condolences to your widow and family.
