Ivan was the greatest. He always gave his best whether it was a world championship or challenge match. For match after match in the late 1969s he just seemed unbeatable. R. I .P
Absolute superstar, gentleman and hard as nails racer, will be sadly missed but never forgotten, watched you on the tv as a little lad, you made this sport what it is today x
I had the pleasure of meeting the legend Ivan Mauger at Berwick. When Ivan and Jim McMillan did some legends racing. This man was a true gent.
The whole world knew of Ivan Mauger.
First of all my sincere condolences to the Mauger family. Ivan Mauger, well what can you say in one word PHENOMENAL PERSON AND SPEEDWAY RIDER. Having first seen Ivan ride at Hyde Road in 1969 for the Belle Vue Aces, I knew instantly he was the the rider who I would support throughout his fantastic riding career. He was a great influences in my life at that time of which I am truly grateful. Having met Ivan on quite a few occasions around the British Speedway tracks he always had time to chat, sign autographs, of which I have many. I thank you Ivan for the fantastic times in the years of watching you racing. The highlight which stays in my mind was the third World Final win in Poland 1970. What a phenomenal racing career. You will never be forgotten, many signed pictures hang proud in my abode. As a reminder of the great times you gave me personally. R.I.P. IVAN and a million thank you's.
Such a sad loss, Ivan was Mr Speedway and a true gentlemen. Had the pleasure of watching Ivan and Barry Briggs match race at Workington in the seventies, then met him and Raye at Workington when he was promoting his book Will To Win. He talked about the book and his passion for the sport. You may be gone Ivan but you will never be forgotten. R I P IVAN
I was privileged to see Ivan race many times and was present at some of his world championships wins. He oozed professionalism and at times seemed untouchable, uncatchable and unbeatable. Above all else he seemed to eat, drink and live speedway. I was truly saddened to hear of his dreadful illness and, of course, his passing. RIP champ.
RIP Ivan the greatest of all time. Thanks for those wonderful memories
Seen Ivan ride many times both in Scotland and in World Finals at Wembley.....simply the greatest rider of them all. RIP Ivan, from a Glasgow Tigers fan for over 50 years.
RIP Ivan, it was a privilege to see you ride many times during your amazing career. One of the best riders ever, your record speaks for itself. I doubt if I will ever see better in my lifetime. I send my condolences to all your family, who must be so proud of what you achieved.
May God bless you.
I knew a few people who were Speedway fanatics, one even named her son Ivan, but they never went to another meeting once he retired. R.I.P.
I remember the first report on the radio of Ivan winning the World Final in Sweden, his move from Newcastle to Belle Vue, and I was there the night he turned up in Exeter where I was a regular supporter. I last saw Ivan in Swindon a few years ago when he was promoting his book. He was the forerunner of the professional speedway rider. REST IN PEACE
Such a sad loss to his family and the world of speedway. I had the honour of seeing him ride many times including one of my life long memories when my Dad took me to Wembley in 1972 to see Ivan win the World Title. Little did I know that years later he would be training my son at his academies in UK and New Zealand and showing us around the Christchurch museum where we saw the gold bike. Such an inspiring and genuine man. He was the greatest role model possible. Rest in peace Ivan.
Loved watching you race in the 60's 70's R.I.P Ivan
RIP Ivan.
Many years ago I took my youngest son to see him at Poole when he rode for Exeter. He was in fine form that day and my son said he was like a white tornado. Happy memories of a master of his craft.
Fred Cox (speedway fan for 70 years)
R.I.P Ivan,
You were simply the best, thanks for the memories
??????????????????????????????
If I'm honest I don't think I ever cheered for Ivan to win as he was always riding for an opposing team or I was supporting someone else in an individual meeting. But he was an awesome rider and he has definitely left his mark on the record books. Thoughts for his family and friends. It's hard to believe he was 78 but he packed a lot into those years - You will always be remembered by the people that watched you race. Thanks and rest in peace.
I am glad I got to see you ride, on numerous occasions when you first came to Sheffield. Plenty of talent even in the early days and what you achieved was incredible, GONE but will NEVER be forgotten.
