A tragedy. Our wonderful sport has lost one of its biggest superstars. Watching "World of Sport" in the early 70's , listening to Dave Lanning introduce Mauger, Briggs, Olsen, Collins playing to packed out stadiums and giving Speedway a huge platform. When Ivan visited Poole, the queues around the Stadium would start at lunchtime as the Pirates fans prayed to see one of our own lower his colours, not that we ever did.
Such a clever man, both on and off the track. I had the privilege of staying with Ivan and Raye on a short stop to Queensland some years ago. Occasionally Ivan would call me to discuss the sport, imagine the excitement of seeing your phone flash with the name Ivan Mauger, a feeling that will live with me forever.
RIP Ivan Mauger.
The greatest speedway rider there ever was or ever will be.
I was privileged and lucky to see him ride many times for the Belle Vue Aces when I think he was at his best.
Thank you for the great memories, a true legend and gentleman. Rest in peace
I saw most of my speedway between 1964 and 1981 and saw Ivan on many occasions. I doubt there was any major meeting in England which included Ivan that I did not attend. He was so smooth and made speedway look easy. Never the most exciting rider but certainly the finest of his generation. Had he not fallen in the run-off with Szjackiel I am sure he would have been a 7-time World Champion.
So sad. The best
If you speak to anyone born around the 50's, 60's and 70's and you mention you go to speedway they immediately say 'ah yes Ivan Mauger'. That says it all, a true legend and if you have never seen Ivan ride you have missed something really magical and special. R.I.P.
If there is speedway in heaven he will be number one. What lucky people we were to see such a star.
Ivan the greatest there has ever been & will ever be the king of speedway. Thanks for the memories
Very sad to read of the passing of 'wor' Ivan. Only ever got to see him after he had ended his riding career. However have read and collected programmes & magazines since becoming hooked on speedway & his record over 3 decades against his peers speaks for itself. Was the first great professional, he lived & breathed the sport. RIP Ivan
I am the same age as Ivan and was lucky enough to see him when he started and see him many times. He always had time for us fans. He will be sadly missed.
I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Ivan Mauger. I first saw him, as a 9 year old Rayleigh Rockets supporter, at the 1972 Wembley World Final, which he won. I have seen him race many times ever since and have long thought that he was the best speedway rider that the world has ever seen, and will probably ever see.
I was fortunate to meet him at a book signing for his book, 'The Will to Win', and enjoyed a conversation with him and Raye. For a man who was a multi world champion, he was both engaging and humble. Speedway is the poorer for his passing.
My sincere condolences to the Mauger family.
Followed Ivan & Barry Briggs in the 60/70s.
Ivan was a true gentleman. RiP love from Australia
So sad to hear of Ivan's passing. Always enjoyed watching him ride. He went to my husband's place of work in Manchester for something he needed urgently for his bike as he was riding at Exeter that night. Still have the lovely message & autograph he wrote for us all those years ago. R.I.P. Ivan a true gentleman x
Ivan you were and you are a superstar. Thanks for the great memories.
Ken
What a brilliant speedway rider, my thoughts go to his family at this time and I do hope he is remembered for his outstanding contribution to speedway, he was the pioneer. God bless
Speedway's greatest rider beyond any doubt. We will probably never see his like again. A true ambassador for our sport.
My sincere condolences to Raye, Julie, Debbie and Kym.
RIP Ivan and thank you for the many hours of pleasure you gave us.
I was only 6 years old when Ivan helped bring speedway to Barrow. Remember seeing him parading around the Holker Street track with his world championship trophy and his gold plated bike on display. Hooked on speedway ever since. Thanks for the memories Ivan, sadly missed. R.I.P
I was privileged to see Ivan race for Belle Vue when I first went to Speedway in 1969/70 and I have been going ever since. In that time I have not seen another rider with his determination and professionalism. He was simply on another level to everyone else. No one will ever match his achievements in Speedway. RIP Ivan you will be sadly missed.
Always remember the help Ivan gave me when I attended his Training Schools back in the 70's. RIP Ivan
Watched Ivan race for Belle Vue from 1969 0n. Have to say he was the best rider over the years, true professional very smart bikes, someone I will always remember. "Thanks Ivan for giving so many people so much pleasure watching you race, you will be sadly missed."
Condolences to the Mauger family and friends, R I P Ivan
I had the good fortune to see Ivan ride on many tracks around the UK, he set the bar high, a true professional, a gentleman and ambassador for speedway. RIP Ivan
